By decision of the 33rd session of the UNESCO General Ñonference,
the centenary of Academician N. Sissakian is included in
the list of celebration of anniversaries associated
with UNESCO in 2006-2007.

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

On 24-28 January 2007, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Division of Biological Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Bach Institute of Biochemistry of RAS, the Russian State Scientific Centre "Institute of Biomedical Problems" of RAS, together with the Bunatian Institute of Biochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, Yerevan State University, and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research hold the III International Symposium "Problems of Biochemistry, Radiation and Space Biology" dedicated to the centenary of the birth of Academician Norair Sissakian.

Academician N. Sissakian is famous as the author of pioneer papers on biochemistry of sub-cell structures and technical biochemistry. He was one of the first scientists in the mid-1940s to start the studies of plant cell structures, primarily, chloroplasts. New data were obtained in his laboratory on the chemical composition of chloroplasts, and many enzymes were discovered which take part in different biochemical processes, including those not directly bound to the photosynthesis which laid the basis for N. Sissakian to establish an absolutely new concept of chloroplasts as polyfunctional cell structures.

Like in the field of biochemistry of cell structure, Academician N. Sissakian was also a pioneer in space biology. He laid down the main trends of the development of this new direction of the biological science, and during a short period of time activities were started with his personal participation to solve the tasks of selection and training of astronaut candidates, work-out of life-support and safety systems in flights, medical control of astronauts and the subsequent study of their health conditions.

For a number of years, Academician N. Sissakian was Academician-Secretary of the Division of Biological Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences, member of the Presidium and Chief Scientific Secretary of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Academician N. Sissakian is also renowned as an outstanding organizer of the international cooperation. He was among initiators of the Pugwash movement of scientists for peace. In 1964-1966 he was President of the XIII session of the UNESCO General Conference.
